142 Duane Street

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Duane Street, 142
 condominium  Add category

7-story Italianate residential building completed in 1860 as a store-and-loft building. The design of 142 Duane Street is the mirror image of that of No. 146. Faced in marble (now painted), the facade above the first story has four bays of square-headed window openings per story. Bracketed triangular pediments and molded lintels, eared surrounds, sill courses, and quoins at the east end enrich the design. The facade is crowned by a dentiled and modillioned stone cornice.

Since the 1880s, 142 Duane has housed many shoe wholesalers; other tenants have included printers and a rubber company. From the 1970s, the first story was occupied by M&H Shoes, Inc., with storage for the Simon Shoe Co. and offices above. The building was converted to residential around 2000.
