Archaeological Museum and Early Christian Complex.
Early Christian complex, opened in 1967 by Prof. Alexandra Milcheva. It consists of a three-aisled basilica with a narthex and an atrium from the so-called Hellenic type. The basilica was built in the middle of the 4th century and lasted until the middle of the 6th century. To the west of it a part of a late antique street (cardo maximus) was discovered, the main street of the old town. Together with the premises north of the basilica, which probably served as an episcopal residence, a common complex was formed. it was part of the early Christian center of the village below the present town of Sandanski. In the V-VI century the ancient city was a leading economic and cultural center of the region and played an important role in the spread of Christianity in our lands.
The remains of the early Christian Basilica of Bishop John became the basis for the construction of today's Archaeological Museum of Sandanski Town. The museum is located in situ, ie. on site on the basilica, and is one of the few in the country built in this way. The reason for its opening was the IV Archaeological Conference in Blagoevgrad Town in 1970.
