Edgbaston (Birmingham)

Edgbaston is a district in the city of Birmingham in the West Midlands conurbation and metropolitan county in central England. It is also a UK Parliamentary electoral constituency and a formal administrative constituency district of the City of Birmingham, managed by its own district committee. The constituency district includes the smaller City electoral wards of Edgbaston together with the neighbouring wards of Bartley Green, Harborne and Quinton (see outline map above).

Edgbaston traditionally has a reputation for being one of the most upmarket and affluent parts of Birmingham or "where the trees begin". In the 19th century, the area was under the control of the Gough-Calthorpe family who refused to allow factories or warehouses to be built in Edgbaston, thus making it attractive for the middle class. However, while the central and southern parts of the suburb remain ostensibly affluent, there are some areas that are less so, with a high proportion of multi-occupancy rented private housing, as well as council-owned accommodation. Edgbaston is also home to the University of Birmingham, established as Birmingham Medical School in 1825, and the Warwickshire County Cricket Ground, one of England foremost premier grounds.

Edgbaston means "village of a man called Ecgbald", from the Old English personal name + tun "farm". The personal name Ecgbald means "bold sword" (literally "bold edge"). The name was recorded as Celboldistane in 1139, wrongly suggesting that Old English stān "stone, rock" is the final element of the name.

Today it is Birmingham's once-fashionable Victorian suburb dominated by the university, its original Edwardian buildings marked by a tall campanile. Among its associated buildings are the Barber Institute of Fine Arts art gallery and concert hall. Long-established Botanical Gardens with tropical plants are a major attraction, as are Cannon Hill Park with Midland Arts Centre houses, and Edgbaston Reservoir known its watersports.

Communities and neighbourhoods (in whole or in part) within the district include: Chad Valley, Harborne, Bartley Green, Shenley Fields, Quinton, Woodgate and the Grove.
