condominium, high-rise, 1916_construction
208-foot, 22-story residential building originally completed in 1916. Designed by Severance & Van Alen as a 16-story office building, it was formerly part of the International Toy Center, but underwent a series of sales in the 2000s, and in 2013, began being rebuilt as luxury condominiums, with a 6-story addition of penthouses on the roof, re-branded as 10 Madison Square West.
The building spans seven bays on Broadway, and nine bays along 24th Street, with an a 1-bay chamfered corner at the southeast, with an entrance to the retail space. On Broadway there is a revolving door entrance and a large bronze marquee, four globular building lights and sidewalk landscaping. Above the 3-story base, the building’s old façade has been modernized with a central grid fenestration pattern on Broadway flanked by multi-floor vertical groupings and topped with two-story groupings beneath the first setback that does not extend fully to the corners.
The new 6-story addition on top is recessed on all sides, including the chamfered corner, with similar fenestration to the lower floors. The old 16-story building was connected to 200 Fifth Avenue by a 9th floor pedestrian skywalk that was constructed in 1968, when the two buildings were joined as the International Toy Center which has now been removed.
10 Madison Square West contains 125 condominium units which underwent a recent restoration and recladding by Goldstein, Hill & West Architects with an interior by Alan Wanzenberg Design for the Witkoff Group. It is now managed by Douglas Elliman. The ground floor is occupied by PetSmart, and a Citibank branch.
