skyscraper, apartment building
348-foot, 34-story postmodern residential building completed in 2003. Designed by H. Thomas O'Hara, it consists of a setback tower atop a 2-story base. The ground floor is limestone, divided into three bays of segmental-arches; the western one has a storefront, the main entrance is recessed in the middle bay (below a rounded metal canopy), and the western bay has the entrance/exit to the parking garage. The 2nd floor is clad in red brick, with three segmental-arches openings framed by stone at the top and bottom. The openings have black metal screens, and there are light fixtures attached to the walls between the bays. Each arch has a large keystone. At the top of the base are pairs of narrow, horizontal openings in each bay of the stone parapet wall. There are black metal screens in the openings, and the piers are ornamented with projecting diamond shapes within circles.
The set-back tower is furthest recessed at the ends bays, which are clad in white pre-cast stone. The middle bays on each side project further forward, and are clad in red brick. The two center bays are also clad in brick, and project the most forward, but still behind the base. Each bay has double-windows in grey metal frames, with black metal vents below, and stone band courses above. All the windows wrap around the corners.
Between the two center bays are stone diamond and circle ornament like those at the top of the base. The center bays set back above the 15th floor; they then set further back above the 19th floor, from which point they are clad in pre-cast stone, as are the inward-facing side walls of the recessed area. The intermediate bays at each side set back above the 30th floor.
The north facade, visible from 34th Street, is asymmetrical, but each bay has double-windows. The westernmost bay is clad in white pre-cast stone; to its east are two bays of red brick, with black metal vents below the windows, and diamond-circle ornament between the two bays. To the left is a narrow bay with white stone spandrels; these four bays rises to the roof line, with a mechanical penthouse rising above the two at the west. The east end is set far back, with another bay with white stone spandrels and black metal vents at the corner, separated from a narrow bay of single-windows by an area of red brick with more diamond-circle ornaments.
The east and west side elevations rise vertically to the roof line. The west side has white pre-cast stone at the edges (with windows wrapping around the corners from the north and south facades), and a wider white section in the center. This section has a bay of single-windows that are surrounded by red brick up to the 20th floor. On either side are areas of red brick rising to the 32nd floor; the southern one has a bay of single-windows rising to the 30th floor. The east elevation also has white edges with window wrapping around from the corners. The red-brick middle section has a bay of single-windows rising to the 20th floor, with diamond-circle ornaments above. The north side of this elevation is set back and clad in red brick with diamond-circle ornaments.
The Magellan has 168 apartments.
