The Charity Hospital was founded in 1736 by a French sailor who left a grant in his last testament to create a hospital to help the indigent. It was originally located in the French Quarter across from the Chart House Lounge on Chartres and Bienville (that building is being renovated to house a bank at this time). It is the second oldest continually operating hospital, beat only by Bellevue in New York which was only opened a couple of months earlier. The building was designed in the 1930's by Weiss, Dreyfous & Seiferth as a Public Works Administration project.
After Hurricane Katrina, the structure remained abandoned until being repurposed by Tulane University in 2022.
