George Washington Carver High School for Applied Technology, Engineering and the Arts (Houston, Texas)

USA / Texas / Hudson / Houston, Texas / South Victory Street, 2100
 magnet school, high school

The George Washington Carver High School For Applied Technology, Engineering, & The Arts originally opened here in 1954 as the George Washington Carver High School, splitting off from the all-grades George Washington Carver School (which became an elementary school, and today is A.B. Anderson Elementary). It remained an all-black segregated high school up until 1978 when the district was de-segregated, and the school was converted into the Aldine Contemporary Education Center (ACE), a magnet school for non-African American students aimed at flexible hours and voluntary enrollment. The school was a success and in 1994 it was reverted back to a similar name: the George Washington Carver High School For Applied Technology, Engineering and the Arts.
