Acres Homes (or Acreage Homes) is an historically African-American community in Houston, Texas, located approximately ten miles northwest of downtown Houston. Once an unincorporated area of Harris County, its boundaries are loosely formed by Pinemont Street to the south, North Shepherd Drive to the east, Gulf Bank Road to the north, and White Oak Bayou to the west.
The community derives its name from the fact that land there was sold by the acre and not by the lot; it initially developed around the time of World War I, when landholders began selling off homesites on plots big enough to allow for small gardens and to maintain livestock and farm animals. The first settlers came from mostly rural regions of the southern United States, attracted by the area's inexpensive land, low property taxes, and the absence of municipal building standards.
The eastern part of the community (sometimes referred to on county documents as Highland Heights) is zoned to the Houston Independent School District, and is served by Washington High School. The western part is zoned to the Aldine Independent School District and is served by Carver, Aldine, Eisenhower and MacArthur High Schools. A small section of Super Neighborhood #5 (Inwood and some areas outside of the city limits still considered to be part of the Acres Homes area) is within the Klein Independent School District and is served by Klein Forest High School.
Before it was annexed by the city of Houston in the late 1960s, Acres Homes was considered to be the largest unincorporated black community in the southern United States; it wasn't until the city of Houston annexed the community that city services (including sewage lines) were made available, and even today, many parts of the community remain undeveloped.
Notable former residents of Acres Homes include:
●Loretta Devine, actress and singer
●Sylvester Turner, current Mayor of Houston and former State Representative
●Ben Wilson, former college and professional football player
