Western High School is a pioneer in women's public education. The school was founded in 1844 and is the oldest all-female high school in the United States. Baltimore Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1883. The two schools relocated from a succession of in-town campuses to their new shared 53 acre campus in 1967. Originally, an all-male school, Poly became coeducational 1974. Western remains all-female.
