Western High School is a pioneer in women's public education. The school was founded in 1844 and is the oldest all-female high school in the United States. Baltimore Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1883. The two schools relocated from a succession of in-town campuses to their new shared 53 acre campus in 1967. Originally, an all-male school, Poly became coeducational 1974. Western remains all-female.

It is the oldest public engineering school in America and is celebrating its 125 year in existence this year. The BPI Engineers are the local rivals of the Baltimore City College Knights. Their annual football classic is the second-longest continuous rivalry in America. Poly won the 2008 meeting, the first win in four years, and leads the overall series.
