The ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa are considered one of the most important and best preserved Roman cities in the Near East. It was a city of the Decapolis, and since first century AD to eight century AD was an important settlement in the north of the actually Jordan. Approximately half of the ancient city (which finally reached a size of about 800,000 square metres within its walls) is under the modern Jerash.
