Umayyad Mosque

Jordan / Jaras /

Discovered in 2002, the mosque was probably built in the reign of the active Umayyad caliph Hisham b. Abd al-Malik (r. 724–43 CE). It was constructed over a demolished Late Antique bathhouse. The mosque is a rectangular building (44.5 m x 39 m); the walls are double faced with rubble core, 0.70 m thick. On three sides of the courtyard are porticoes 4.80 m deep.
