The refinery was built in 1939 by Northwestern Refining and purchased in 1970 by Ashland Petroleum Company.

Located on the Mississippi River, the refinery has a capacity of 74,000 barrels per calendar day. Crude oil from Canada and the United States is processed at the refinery into gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, jet fuel, kerosene, propane and asphalt. Most gasoline products produced at the refinery are marketed locally at Marathon’s SuperAmerica retail outlets. The refinery employs approximately 300 employees and numerous contractors from the Twin Cities area.
