Lakeville is a city located in Dakota County, Minnesota. It is one of the southernmost suburbs of Minneapolis. The population was 56,443 at the 2011 census.

Lakeville, named like the township, received its first settlers in 1855. When the Hastings and Dakota railroad was built in 1869, a new village site was chosen, at first called Fairfield. This village superseded the older Lakeville and adopted that name in its act of incorporation on March 28, 1878.

The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad served Lakeville until 1980.
