Terezin

Czech Republic / Ustecky / Terezin /
 town, fortification, bastion (fortification part)

Garrison town built in 1780, surrounded by a huge fortress. During WWII, the Nazis emptied the town of its Czech inhabitants and turned it into a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp, the "paradise ghetto" of Theresienstadt, designed to be shown to foreigners.

After the war, the town was repopulated by Czechs. The adjacent Little Fortress, which had been the SS prison, was made into a museum by the Communist government, which mentioned only the Gentiles who had been persecuted there. It was not until 1991 that the Ghetto Museum in the town was privately opened.
