Říp is a most memorable and venerated Czech mountain and permanent symbol of the national history. It is 459 m solitary arched hill rising up from the Central Bohemian Flatland. Geologically, Říp is a remnant of a tertiary volcano and is composed of basalt nephelites.
On the top of the hill there is a romanesque rotunda of St. George built by Czech King Soběslav I. in 1126 to commemorate his victorious battle of Chlumec (50°42'1.746"N, 13°56'46.878"E), where he defeated German King Lothair II.
The top of Říp has been a place of popular pilgrimage and a frequent site of national manifestations and mass meetings.
