condominium, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, Italianate style (architecture)
5-story Italianate condominium building completed in 1857. Designed by Gamaliel King and John Kellum as a store-and-loft building, it has as its main address 105 Chambers Street. The entry on Reade Street has its address as 89 Reade Street and the ground level businesses along Church Street have addresses that range from 154 - 168 Church Street.
The cast-iron end facades were provided by Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Work. The twin-facaded building was constructed for Cary, Howard & Sanger, a dry goods firm, in a particularly elaborate variation of the Italianate style. Each of the end facades has eight bays of round-arched windows. The recessed window openings are flanked by paired Corinthian columns topped by impost blocks supporting semi-circular arches with a raised floral motif. Rolling iron shutters—an early innovation by Badger—are extant in the reveals of the arches and can be pulled down over the windows. Slender band courses further mark the design.
Both facades are crowned by a heavy bracketed cornice rising to form a triangular pediment above the bays. Set within the pediment is a large cartouche which reads: "Cary Building". The east elevation, visible due to the demolition of the neighboring building when Church Street was widened, is faced in white brick (parged) and has been pierced by eight bays of square-headed window openings per story. Storefronts have been inserted at the first story.
The building was erected for the Cary, Howard & Sanger company - the building housed the firm's headquarters, containing space for salesrooms and storage. In 1950 the building was purchased by Copy Craft, Inc. It was renovated into condominiums in 2014. The ground floor is occupied by a Bank of America branch, Fast Broadway Shoe Repair, Canyon Ridge convenience store, SP's Nuts & Candy (maybe the last place in New York City to get nuts that are roasted on site), Unique Shape eyebrow threading salon, Happy Land massage, City Hall Fine Wines, Kim's Nails, Dona Bella Pizza, and Smalltalk Wireless.
