Bulfinch Gatepost (Washington, D.C.)

USA / District of Columbia / Washington / Washington, D.C.
gate, place with historical importance, pylon, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

On this corner stands a carved rusticated sandstone post twelve feet high, five feet to a side. The stone pylon was relocated here from the original site on the Capitol grounds where it supported part of a sturdy decorative fence which was meant originally to keep cattle (which freely pastured the city's green spaces in the early 19th century) from wandering too close to the lawmakers' building. Architect Charles Bulfinch, designer of the early US Capitol rotunda and dome, designed this post.
