A partially man made inlet that is 146 acres across and 10 feet deep it is surrounded by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jefferson Memorial. It is designed to release 250 million gallons of water captured during high tide. The Basin is surrounded by flowering cherry trees that bloom each year in late March and early April.
