The former Doumont farm has been turned into a wildlife wetland, creating a good site for birdwatching. During the cooler months the marsh itself offers the best viewing, while in the spring warblers and other birds populate the forest along the powerlines to the east and west.
For those interested in birdwatching in the Nanaimo area, The Backyard Wildbird and Nature Store sponsors guided birdwatching walks throughout the region on most Sunday and Tuesday mornings. These walks are free and open to newcomers, and are generally 2 or 3 hours in length. They leave from the Store at 9 A.M. Sunday mornings and go to various locations in and around Nanaimo. On Tuesdays meet at the Parksville Beach Community Park at 9 A.M. for walks to different areas in and around the Parksville area.
A birdwalk here at Legacy Marsh on April 19, 2009 had sixteen birders finding the following thirty-seven species of birds-
Canada Goose, Mallard, Ringed-neck Duck, Bufflehead, California Quail, Wilson's Snipe, Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Band-tailed Pigeon, Rufous Hummingbird, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker, Northwestern Crow, Common Raven, Bewick's Wren, Winter Wren, Marsh Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Golden-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, European Starling, Cassin's Vireo, Orange-crowned Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Black-throated Grey Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Red-winged Blackbird, Purple Finch, Pine Siskin.
