Laguna de Tacarigua is a protected national park area and also an International Ramsar Wetland site. The series of lakes are fed by rivers coming down from the mountains. They connect to the sea by a small mouth in a spit of land that separates them from it. The salt content in the lakes varies depending on the season. If it is very dry, the water level in the lakes falls and the mouth may close off entirely. At other times the mouth is open and the water level rises. Mangrove swamps grow throughout the lakes and the area is a haven for an incredible variety of animals, fish, and birds.
