Pawleys Island is one of the oldest resort areas in America. Wealthy plantation owners summered on the island to escape malaria from the relatively swampy grounds of the plantations.

The islands maintains a very laid-back atmosphere, though many long-standing residences were destroyed during 1989's Hurricane Hugo. Rope hammocks, commonly known as Pawleys Island rope hammocks, were developed on the island in the late 1800s.

The Weather Channel has done a one hour show about the protective spirit, The Grey Man, that walks the island, shielding against storms.
