Town with a population of 17,870 at the 2010 census, with an estimated population of 14,329 in 2005. It is the County seat of Lexington County.

One of the original townships established by royal decree in 1735 to encourage development in the Carolinas. It was originally named Saxe Gotha to honor Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, George II's daughter-in-law. In 1785 the General Assembly reformed the township into Lexington County, named after the first Revolutionary War battle in Massachusetts.

The county courthouse was moved here in 1820 and the resulting development was known as Lexington Courthouse. Incorporated as Lexington in 1861. Destroyed by General Sherman's forces in the Civil War, rebuilt over the next several decades.One of South Carolina's Fastest Growing Cities.
