City with a 2010 Census population of 731,424, making it the largest city in North Carolina. Named for Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who married King George III the year before the city was incorporated in 1768. Originally settled in 1755 by Thomas Polk, uncle of future president James K. Polk. A site of pro-Revolutionary sentiment during the American Revolution and the site of skirmishes between American and British troops. Site of the nation's first gold rush in the 1830's and remained the largest source of gold in the United States until the 1848 gold rush. Developed after the Civil War as a railroad hub and cotton processing center. Became a major banking center in the 1970s and '80s.
