Town with a population of 1,626 at the 2010 census. A major tourist resort developed over the last thirty years by Kuwaiti investors until 1988 and from then by Kiawah Resort Associates. Hosts world-renowned golf courses which will host the 2012 PGA Championship. Named for the Kiawah tribe of Native Americans who lived here when Europeans first arrived on the coast. Incorporated as a town in 1988.
