Town with a population of 1,275 at the 2000 census. Originally the site of settlements by the Yemassee Indians in the early 18th century. The Yamassee were ejected and in 1718 the area was placed under British control. The town became a settlement for plantation owners seeking vacation homes on high ground with exposure to breezes that prevented malaria. The town was laid out in the mid-1800s and named for its elevation above the surrounding lands. Incorporated by the General Assembly in 1852.
