Brooklyn Technical High School is one of New York City's three original specialized high schools, along with the Bronx High School of Science and Stuyvesant High School, these schools accept students from anywhere in the city through competitive examination. "Brooklyn Tech" as it is commonly known, is renowned for its math, science, and engineering programs. The current building was designed in the 1930's by Walter C. Martin. The main hallway features a mural by Maxwell Starr entitled “The History of Mankind".

It is a founding member of the NCSSSMST, and operated by the New York City Department of Education. Admission is by competitive examination, and as a public school, there is no tuition fee. Brooklyn Tech is noted for its famous alumni, its academics, and the large number of graduates attending prestigious universities.

It has the largest enrollment of the city's specialized high schools, and is the sixth-largest school in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. In 2006, all three schools were cited by The Washington Post as among the best magnet schools in the United States.
