This approximately 5-mile-long section of scenic roadway located within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal program that operated between 1933 and 1942. The program provided work for unmarried, unemployed men who were struggling to find work during the Great Depression. In addition to the road itself, the man-made features of the historic district include five overlooks, as well as drainage culverts, retaining walls and an administrative complex, which is no longer actively used.
