Salt Lake City, Utah

USA / Utah / Salt Lake City /
city, capital city of state/province/region, county seat

Salt Lake City is the capital, the most populous city of the U.S. state of Utah, and the county seat of Salt Lake County. Salt Lake City has a population of 181,743. The Salt Lake City metropolitan area spans Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties, and has a total estimated population of 1,018,826. Salt Lake City is further situated in a larger urban area known as the Wasatch Front, home to over 2,000,000 people (80% of the state population.)

The area was first settled by the Shoshone, Ute and Paiute Native Americans. It was first explored by the Spanish in the 18th century and by Americans in 1825. John Fremont surveyed the Salt Lake Valley in 1843 and 1845. The first permanent Euro-American settlement was by the Latter-Day Saints, who came to the area in 1847 under Brigham Young, who announced it was the divinely sanctioned place for Mormon settlement. The settlement, originally named Great Salt Lake City after the nearby lake, became the capital of the extra-legal territory of Desert, a Mormon-led theocratic colony. In 1850 the US Congress abolished Desert and formed the Territory of Utah, moving the capital to Fillmore from Salt Lake City.

In 1857 the US Army occupied the city during the Utah War, a period of conflict between the federal government and the LDS Church. In 1858 it became the territorial capital, and throughout the next several decades the city grew to one of the largest in the western US. The Transcontinental Railroad was finished nearby in 1869, at Promontory Summit. The city was the site of an early Chinatown built by Chinese immigrants who had come to construct the railroad. In 1896 the city became state capital upon Utah's statehood. In the 20th century the city's population declined, and sizable gay and Hispanic communities developed here. In 2002 the city hosted the Winter Olympics.

  • i think salt lake is a beautiful city and very easy to get around in, the streets are super wide and traffic is minimal compared to other big cities.
  • ^That has nothing to do with what religion he is. There are plenty of people of all religions who can and can't punctuate and spell correctly. Anyway, SLC is alright, but nothing amazing.
  • Eh its not that bad, I live there, kinda awesome
  • I live here and I have lived here for past 35 years I travel the world but I tell you what this is the place. friendly people great place to raise your kids. and best snow in the world , and the mormons here are the best they never bother you or try to convert you as long as you live here.
  • ^I don't know where you live, but they bother me all the time. I wont contradict you on that it's a great place to raise your kids. On the whole, it's nice, but nothing amazing.
  • Alright enough on the mormons, I am not mormon, I am catholic, but this is about Salt Lake City. We are by far one of the best cities in the country. We have a wide variety of shopping, some of the best public transport in the country, beautiful scenery, amazing ski resorts, only Colorado beats us on that, a growing population, booming economy. You dont get any better than Salt Lake City.
  • It is easy to confuse Salt Lake City proper with the outlying areas. Salt Lake is a very progressive city with a long list of internationally acclaimed accomplishments, be they involving environmental, public transport, non-discrimination, and city planning policies. I have lived in the general valley growing up and I now wouldn't live anywhere but the city itself. A work of art as a town with a glorious backdrop!
  • Nice city
  • Salt Lake City is a nice place to live. Lot's of attractions and things to do in the area, as well as a beautiful landscape too. Some of the communities here are some of the best places to live in the United States based on the living standards. Some people always go on about there being a lot of Mormons here as if that's a bad thing, but most of them are good people. I'm an atheist, I've never had any issues with them. I could do without the cold weather in winter, but overall, it's a nice place to live.
  • The drivers can be just terrible and the city gets pretty creepy. It can be a great place to visit, not really stay though. Almost every week on the news I hear some person harassing some kid. Not a good place for kids in my honest opinion. Personally I really don't like it here, but it's probably because I'm atheist. I really don't know what you people have been seeing or living in, it seems to be just fantastic for you guys.
