First Houses is the oldest residential development in the New York City Housing Authority. Completed May 31, 1936 to a design by Frederick L. Ackerman (formerly of the firm of Trowbridge & Ackerman), this 1.23 acre development has 126 apartments in eight 4- and 5-story buildings. It is located on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The parcel of land the houses were located on were purchased from Vincent Astor and the city used eminent domain to secure the remaining property.

The complex was designated a New York City landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
