Texas Southern University (TSU) is an historically black university (HBCU) located in the Third Ward community of Houston, Texas. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, TSU is one of only four independent public universities in Texas not affiliated with any of the state's six public university systems.

The university was established on March 3, 1947 by the Texas Legislature and it was initially named the Texas State University for Negroes, established to serve African Americans in Texas and offer them fields of study comparable to that available to white Texans. Prior to becoming a state university, TSU was owned by the Houston Independent School District and had been known as the Houston College for Negroes.

The university sits on a 150-acre campus, and consists of 11 schools and colleges:
