Rice University is a private research university located in Houston, Texas, near the Museum District and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center.

The university is named in honor of William Marsh Rice, a Massachusetts-born businessman who bequeathed his fortune to found the school in 1891, and was originally called The William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science, and Art.

Rice's tyipcal undergraduate enrollment is around 3,000 students. The university is organized into eight schools offering 40 undergraduate degree programs, 51 masters programs, and 29 doctoral programs.
