The Caesars Superdome (originally the Louisiana Superdome, and often informally referred to simply as the Superdome or The Dome) is a multi-purpose sports and exhibition facility in the Central Business District of New Orleans.
The largest fixed domed structure in the world, its steel frame covers a 13-acre (5.3 ha) expanse. Its dome, reaching a height of 273 ft (83 m), is made of a Lamella multi-ringed frame and has a diameter of 680 ft (210 m). Plans for the Superdome were drawn up in 1967 by the architectural firm Curtis and Davis, and it was constructed from August 1971 to August 1975 at a cost of $134,000,000. The stadium has a seating capacity of 73,028, with 14,077 club seats and 137 luxury boxes.
The Superdome is the home of the NFL's New Orleans Saints and the NCAA's Division I Tulane University Green Wave football team; and it also hosts the Sugar Bowl, the New Orleans Bowl (since 2001), and (every fourth year since 2008) the BCS National Championship Game. It is one of the few facilities in the US which makes the "short list" for hosting the Super Bowl and the Final Four. It is a seven-time host of the Super Bowl (1978, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1997, 2002, and 2013) and a five-time host of the NCAA Men's Final Four (1982, 1987, 1993, 2003, and 2012). It also hosted the 1976 NFL Pro Bowl and the 1988 Republican National Convention.
In 2005, the Superdome was used as a "shelter of last resort" for those in New Orleans unable to evacuate from Hurricane Katrina. After having suffered damage from the hurricane, it was refurbished and repaired in early to mid 2006. In 2009-10, the stadium's entire aluminum exterior facade was replaced. The stadium's lower tier was dismantled and rebuilt in 2011. In 2011, Mercedes-Benz acquired the naming rights to the Superdome.
