USS Magnet was a PCE-842 Class Patrol Craft Escort built during the Second World War and commissioned into active service in July 1944. Shortly after her commissioning she was redesignated from a Patrol Craft Escort to a District Degaussing Vessel and sailed for war in the Pacific.
After operating in the hostile waters in and around Okinawa and the home waters of Japan degaussing ships to protect them from the mine-infested Japanese waters, the Magnet returned stateside for decommissioning in 1946.
She remained in the reserve fleet until 1975 when she was stricken from the Naval register and sunk as a target at this location on March 4th, 1976 at 1050 fathoms.
