The 2nd member of the Iwo Jima Class of Helicopter Amphibious Assualt Ships, the Okinawa commissioned into service in 1962 and served with distinction in 7 Vietnam Campaigns as well as the First Gulf War. She decommissioned and was stricken on the same day in 1992 and entered the Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay where she remained until 2002.
On June 6th, 2002 she was selected to serve as the target ship for a COMSUBPAC live fire excercise and was sunk in this location by 1 torpedo fired by the USS Portsmouth (SSN-707) in 2,020 fathoms.
