The monument was built to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State, founded in 681. It recreates some of the most important moments in the history of the First Bulgarian State, from the days of rule of Khan Asparuh to the years of sway of Tsar Simeon.
The architectural part of the monument consists of two groups of different size concrete blocks, skillfully supplemented by 21 sculpture compositions and mosaic-tryptic - the biggest open-air mosaic in Europe.
