Veliki Preslav - The Outer City

Bulgaria / Sumen / Veliki Preslav /
ruined castle, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, former national capital, 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria

The capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from around 893 to 971, thereafter briefly renamed Ioannoupolis while in Byzantine hands, and the second city (at least in ecclesiastical hierarchy) of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The medieval city was given two fortified perimeters, one forming the Inner Fortress (around the imperial and patriarchal palaces), the other forming the larger Outer Fortress. The medieval remains are located just south of the modern town, and much of the stonework was destroyed in modern times as the ruins were used for building materials. The name Veliki Preslav ("Great Preslav") has become official only in 1993, while it was used less formally in medieval sources to distinguish between this city and Mali Preslav/Preslavec ("Little Preslav") near the Mouth of the Danube.
