Roman City of Marcianopol (Marcianopolis).
Thousands of years ago, at the spring of the river named today Devnya, there was a large and important for its location Thracian village. The ancient Thracians considered this place to be blessed by the Gods, The numerous votive tablets of Thracian Gods that have been excavated from the surrounding area suggest that the place was considered to be sacred ground. Here, after the Second Dacian War in 106, the Roman Emperor Trayan founded Marcianopolis, named after the Emperor’s sister (Marciana). It became the capital of the Roman province of Lower Moesia and issued coinage, with Greek inscriptions.
The ongoing archeological digs have revealed numerous artifacts from the Roman epoch – tombstones, sarcophagi, statues and pillars. Exceptional enthusiasm was provoked by the finding of treasure of silver coins, hidden in on of the monumental buildings. Fully excavated is the amphitheatre – a remarkable architectural achievement of its time.
