Adak White Alice Communications Station (Site)

USA / Alaska / Adak /
 military, ruins, tropospheric scatter station

Part of Project Bluegrass, an extension of the White Alice telecommunication system built by the US Air Force to connect remote Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W), Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) and Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) sites, the Adak White Alice site was as a relay post for Eareckson Air Force Base on Shemya Island to the Alaskan mainland. The shots were over 340 miles long and transmitted between Nikolski and Adak, and Adak and Shemya. The 120ft antennas and transmitter buildings were operational from the late '60s-late '70s before being made obsolete by Satellite communication and after operating in a reduced backup role for several years were delcared redundant and razed in the mid-1980's, with all site infrastructure removed by 1987.
