military, place with historical importance

Fort Learnard, consisting of approximately 2,460 acres, is located at Eider Point in Unalaska Bay, Unalaska Island, Alaska, approximately 10 miles northwest from the city of Dutch Harbor. The site was used by the U.S. Army during World War II to provide harbor defenses for the military and naval bases at Dutch Harbor and Unalaska. This site was relinquished to the Bureau of Land Management in 1951. In 1971, a major portion of the site was conveyed to the Ounalashka Corporation and the Aleut Corporation. Site is currently owned by the BLM, Native Corporations, and privately held.
The site was abandoned by the Army in 1945. Improvements on the site include Quonset huts used as troop quarters, offices, and storage; gun emplacements; magazines; search lights; towers; and fuel tanks. These may pose a risk to the public and the environment. Unexploded ordnance remains at the site that needs to be removed. Powder canisters remain in the area but have been found to be empty. This property is known or suspected to contain military munitions and explosives of concern (e.g., unexploded ordnance) and therefore may present an explosive hazard. Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
