cemetery, historic landmark
The Old City Cemetery of Sacramento was established in 1849, with a donation of 10 acres of land by Captain John Sutter. It currently covers about 44 acres and is home to some 25,000 burials, which include early many pioneers and notable Sacramento personages. The cemetery is of the Victorian era garden style, which was popular in the mid to late 19th century. Prior to this, burials in the city were made at an area not far from Sutter's Fort, but it's elevation relative to the American River caused frequent flooding. That area continued in use as a privately operated cemetery, known as the New Helvetia, before reverting to the city. Some of the first burials conducted at this site were victims of the 1850 cholera epidemic.
The Old City Cemetery is the final resting place of many important figures in California and Sacramento history. They include, among many others:
John A. Sutter, Jr. (1826-1896), western pioneer and founder of Sacramento
Edwin B. Crocker (1818-1875), member of the California Supreme Court Justice and
founder of the Crocker Art Museum
Mark Hopkins, Jr. (1813-1878), a member of the 'Big Four' railroad investors who founded the Central Pacific Railroad in 1861
General George Wright (1803-1865), General in the Union Army, Civil War
James L. English (1813-1889), lawyer and Democratic politician, 9th mayor of Sacramento
Jerome C. Davis (1822-1881), American agriculturist, and namesake for the city of Davis
General George Blake Cosby (1830-1909), Confederate Brigadier General, Civil War
Albert Maver Winn (1810-1883), American military officer, and founder of organizations
Sons of the American Revolution and the Native Sons of the Golden West
