This large Catholic cemetery covers some 300 acres, and was established in 1887 by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Of the 17 cemeteries located in Colma, this is the largest and oldest. There are many notable burials here, including Major League Baseball players Joe DiMaggio (1914-1999) and George Kelly (1895-1974), George Mosconi (1929-1978), the 37th mayor of San Francisco, and Joe Carcione (1914-1988), the Bay Area television personality best known as the "Green Grocer". In addition, many victims of the 1919 Spanish Influenza epidemic are also buried here.
