This very large cemetery covers some 187 acres total and is the final resting place for at least 180,000 people. It was established in 1892, after Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco was moved to this current location, with some 35,000 burials being moved with it. Cypress Lawn is a non-sectarian cemetery and is open to all faiths. There are many notable burials here, including publisher William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951), and his father, businessman George Hearst (1820–1891), James Van Ness (1808–1872), the 7th mayor of San Francisco, and Major League Baseball player Francis 'Lefty' O'Doul (1897-1969).

This is the main portion of the cemetery, consisting of the West Side Gardens, between Junipero Serra Blvd and El Camino Real, and the East Side Gardens, which are situated between El Camino Real and Hillside Blvd. The separate Hillside Gardens section is located approximately 1000 feet northwest on Hillside Ave.
