One of the first National Cemeteries, dedicated in 1874 at the site of the original Presidio post cemetery.
Many of the grave markers date from the Spanish-American War. In the late 1930s a new, larger National Cemetery was established south of the San Francisco city limit, but combat casualties from Korea and Veîtnam are also interred here.
Currently occupied by more than 30,000 Americans, including a few civilians.

Dozens of Medal of Honor recipients, plus a woman spy of the Civil War, are buried here.
