The Presidio of San Francisco (originally, El Presidio Real de San Francisco or Royal Presidio of San Francisco) is a park on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula in the City and County of San Francisco. It is operated by the National Park Service of the United States as a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The largest area "Main Post" is managed by the Presidio Trust, a Congressionally chartered nonprofit organization. The park is characterized by many wooded areas, hills, and scenic vistas overlooking the San Francisco Bay.

Established by the Spanish in 1776. Occupied by US forces in 1849.

Formerly home to the Headquarters, Fourth Army from 1933 to 1941, the Headquarters, Ninth Corps Area from 1920 to 1941, the Headquarters, Ninth Coast Artillery District from 1920 to 1941, the 19th Infantry from 1921 to 1922, the 32nd Infantry from 1920 to 1921, the 44th Infantry from 1919 to 1920, the 30th Infantry from 1922 to 1941, the 67th Artillery Regiment, Coast Artillery Corps, the 3rd Division Quartermaster Trains, elements of 58th Quartermaster Regiment and 98th Quartermaster Battalion, and the 24th Balloon Company in 1920.

  • Presidio means prison in Spanish!
  • There were four presidios in California's history: the one here, one in Monterey, one in Santa Barbara, and another located in San Diego. Although the word may mean "prison" in today's modern context, California's presidios were military forts. http://www.militarymuseum.org/Presidios.html
