"Eagle's Nest" was the home of William K. Vanderbilt, II, a 24-room Spanish-revival estate designed by Warren & Wetmore. Construction began around 1910 as a modest bachelor's retreat (possibly built for someone before him), and additions to the original bungalow followed in 1921, upon his father's passing and subsequent marriage in 1927, and again upon the death of his son in 1933. Later additions to the mansion and other buildings were designed by Ronald H. Pearce, and were complete by 1936. The 43-acre estate included boathouse and wharf, two-story automobile garage with large revolving turntable, seaplane hangar, et.al. The main house is very reminiscent of the Casa de Mateus in Portugal, Spain.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum includes the mansion, marine and natural history museums, planetarium and park, dedicated to the education and enjoyment of the public. Its mission shall be achieved through the thoughtful preservation, interpretation and enhancement of the "Eagle's Nest" estate as an informal educational facility. Exhibition and program themes focus upon Long Island's Gold Coast era and upon William K. Vanderbilt, II's desire that his marine, natural history, and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the marvelous diversity of life, other cultures, and scientific knowledge.
