Property was operated during the 19th century under the name of Beacon Farm. It was a multipurpose farm, breeding, raising and grazing sheep, cattle and horses as well as growing hay and harvesting ice. It was described in the “American Agriculturist” magazine in the 19th century as a “model farm.” Many of the original agricultural buildings are still standing including the sheep barn, milking barn, milk rooms, smoke house and caretaker’s house. By the early 20th century, it became more specialized as a dairy farm. Milk bottles with the name of “Beacon Farm” and other nearby dairies for which it supplied milk are still found throughout the property. Henry S. Morgan Sr. purchased Beacon Farm in 1939. During his residence, he grew corn in the fields, raised pheasants and his wife bred and sold yellow Labradors. Beginning in 1980, Sandpiper Farm Riding School became the tenant on the former Beacon Farm lands, comprising 440+ acres. During its years of operation, Sandpiper Farm regularly held horse events ranging from informal carriage drives, combined driving events, horse trials up to Training Level, schooling shows for equitation, clinics taught by internationally recognized instructors and served as a fixture for the Smithtown Hunt, a 501.C-3 organization that was founded in 1900. For decades it has been the site for the Hunter Paces riding event.
