Schurz/Von Steinwehr Monument, Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Battlefield Park.

Battle of Wauhatchie, Night of October 28-29, 1863. Elements of General Carl Schurz’s and General Adolph von Steinwehr’s divisions (US) were positioned on this small knoll, known locally as Tyndale’s Hill.

Battle of Lookout Mountain, November 25, 1863. Maj. General John Hooker (US) watched the famed Battle Above the Clouds from very near this point. Portions of Hooker’s XI & XII Corps assaulted Confederate positions along the crest of Lookout Mountain just to the east. By days end, the Confederates (largely Stevenson’s Division of Breckenridge’s Corps) had been driven off the mountain, retreating eastwards to the main Confederate line on Missionary Ridge.
