Nashville is a consolidated city-county that had a population of 626,681 in 2010. Nashville serves as the county seat of Davidson County, but the two governments are consolidated into one municipality that includes several other municipalities. The city was first settled in 1779 by settlers leaving the dissolved Watauga settlement in western Tennessee. and called Fort Nashborough, after Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash. It grew as a river port and in 1806 was incorporated as the city of Nashville and county seat of Davidson County. It served as capital of Tennessee from 1812 to 1817, and permanently became the state capital in 1826.

In 1862, Union forces captured the city in the course of the Civil War. In 1925 the Grand Ole Opry was built here and the city quickly became the center of the American country music industry. In 1963 the county and city governments were consolidated. The city expanded in size and prominence in the late 20th century.
