city, county seat
City with a population of 101,753 in 2009. County seat of Rutherford County. In 1811 the Tennessee Legislature established a county seat for Rutherford County, first named Cannonsburgh after politician Newton Cannon. It was thereafter renamed after Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War hero. From 1818 to 1826 the city served as the state capital of Tennessee. Union forces captured the city early in 1863 and made it a major supply depot. The city has grown rapidly in recent years as a suburb of Nashville and booming city in its own right.
