East Nashville is one of the oldest areas of the city. Around the turn of the last century it was one of the more fashionable parts of town, but it began a slow decline after a terrible fire in 1916. A tornado in 1933 and "urban renewal" in the 1960s did further damage to this historic district. Over the last few years it has experienced something of a renaissance, attracting new residential and retail development. However, because of its unstable past it is still a higher-crime area and in some spots gang activity is a problem.

The Edgefield neighborhood, which occupies the east bank of the Cumberland across from downtown Nashville, was once a separate city.

  • Oh good grief. Written by someone who doesn't live here, with the emphasis on crime. Hello - we are not the combat zone.
